Description

Cisco Firewall Services Module (FWSM) contains a flaw that may allow a remote denial of service. The issue is triggered when the FWSM receives an unknown malformed packet for one of it's interfaces IP and generates a syslog message with id 710006. This will result in loss of availability for the system.

Technical

The receiving message must not be any of these protocols: TCP, UDP, ICMP, OSPF, Failover, PIM, IGMP and ESP. Additional, syslog generation for ID 710006 must be enabled (default is level 7).

Solution

Upgrade to FWSM version 3.1(3.3) or higher, as it has been reported to fix this vulnerability. It is also possible to correct the flaw by implementing the following workaround(s):

Disable logging of 710006 messages via the global command 'no logging message 710006'
