Description

A local overflow exists in GNU make when installed on certain versions of IBM AIX The program fails to validate the CC resulting in a possible buffer overflow. With a specially crafted request, an attacker can cause arbitrary command execution as root resulting in a loss of confidentiality and/or integrity.

Classification

Location: Local Access Required
Attack Type: Input Manipulation
Impact: Loss of Confidentiality, Loss of Integrity
Exploit: Exploit Available
Disclosure: OSVDB Verified

Technical

GNU make is supposedly installed SUID in /usr/local/bin/make whereas the normal make installed by AIX is /usr/bin/make -> /usr/ccs/bin/make which is not installed SUID.

Solution

Currently, there are no known upgrades or patches to correct this issue. It is possible to correct the flaw by implementing the following workaround(s): remove the SUID bit from the program /usr/local/bin/make using the command chmod.
